Job opening - Software Engineer - Help us build rockets at Space Explorations Technologies (SpaceX) (Los Angeles, CA)

The Company

SpaceX is a US based space technology company founded by its residing CEO and CTO, Elon Musk, the former co-founder of PayPal. The company's goal is to renew a sense of excellence in the space industry by disrupting the current paradigm of complacency and replacing it with innovation and commercialized price points; laying the foundation for a truly space-faring human civilization.

SpaceX builds rockets and spacecraft from the ground up; including electronics, software, vehicle structures, and engines. In-house development includes nearly all flight critical custom components amounting to approximately 85% of our vehicles both by mass and by value. Our development and production efforts represent some of the most dynamic and challenging technology opportunities seen by any organization.

Our success is driven by a wide variety of engineering perspectives and openness to all great ideas. We pride ourselves on bei! ng a meritocracy where employees are defined by their capabilities and contributions, instead of title or tenure. We are actively seeking the best and brightest minds from all industries to continue to build our world class team.

Our employees thrive in a fast-paced engineering ecosystem focused on innovation and high levels of personal responsibility. At SpaceX we cut through the noise and believe in the essentials of hardcore engineering.

We build it, test it, and fly it.

The Department

Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) - Our EIS Software Team has been tasked with developing a custom suite of internal applications critical to the design and production of our Falcon Rockets and Dragon Spacecraft. This system will be capable of tracking every component on our vehicles from the smallest circuit board that controls the spacecraft to the raw copper that will eventually line our rocket engines. It ! has to capture this information, extrapolate key data and gene! rate reports that we can leverage to improve our designs.

The Job

We’re looking for software architects who like to write code. We require engineers who love to learn. Be prepared to attend various technology conferences in search of new ideas and new ways of doing things. We’ll provide you with a week of your own every 5-weeks to explore these ideas without interruption (20% time).

What else? Agile development methodologies, lunch-n-learn sessions, free frozen yogurt, stock options and the opportunity to help advance space technologies further than they’ve ever gone before.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Develop rich user-focused applications that allow us to track every step in the assembly of our Falcon Rockets and Dragon Spacecraft.

  • Develop mobile web applications that allow our engineers to unchain themselves from their desktops and p! erform their functions directly on our 550,000 sq ft production facility.

  • Work with engineering and production staff to understand how they perform the functions of their job; use this knowledge to create applications that make their lives easier.

  • Be creative. Take a traditionally mundane application, such as an Inventory Tracking System, into the 21st century -- add 3D modeling, touch interfaces, photo capture, drag-and-drop functionality, geo-tagging, etc.

SpaceX offers one of the best environments in the world for employees to learn, build real working systems and tackle exciting challenges every day. We operate in a fun, casual work environment and have great benefits including: competitive salary, stock options, medical/dental insurance and free gym memberships. By joining the SpaceX team, you are not just a part of history, you are making it.
