Job opening - The New York Times: User Interface Engineer – Content Management Systems

Location: New York, NY
URL: http://jobs.nytco.com

Job Description:
The New York Times is looking for an experienced software engineer and motivated individual with good UI sensibilities and strong expertise with all aspects of client side development.  We are not looking for a copy/paste hacker who can throw together JS based on sample code, but a serious software engineer who just gets it, someone who can work independently and build an interface from scratch as readily as build upon and improve an existing application.  If you can go to a website and redesign it on the fly using Firebug and the console, you probably have what we are looking for.  In this role, you will be exposed to all parts of the organization, working with software engineers, editorial staff and other end users, and visual designers.

Responsibilities:
  • Create and maintain cutting-edge user interfaces for the internal content management tools used at the New York Times

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Expert with front end technologies.  5+ years of CSS & JavaScript experience and can read and write CSS, HTML, and JavaScript by hand.  Should be immersed enough in these technologies to have philosophies about the organizing and structuring of client-side code.
  • Experience with a JavaScript MVC Framework, such as Backbone.
  • Strong expertise with at least one common JS framework such as YUI, Prototype, or JQuery (preferred) and some experience with others.  You should know enough about these to speak intelligently about the differences between them.
  • Competent with interface design (not necessarily visual design, but tool design).  Candidate can put together a compelling prototype without having a design handed off, or can follow existing design patterns to expand on an existing UI.
  • A solid understanding of web application architecture, object oriented software, and design patterns.  We are not looking for a scripter who can follow examples, but someone who fundamentally understands software development.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with end users and iterate software designs based on feedback.

Pluses:
  • Experience with content management systems or blogging platforms.
  • Experience programming web applications in any object oriented language.
  • Experience with Java and open source Java frameworks, such as Hibernate, Spring, and Struts.
  • Good understanding of databases and SQL.  Ability to manually update data records using hand-written SQL.
  • Understanding of Web Services: REST & Soap and related frameworks.
  • Familiarity with structured data formats (XML, JSON, etc.) and their related tools and technologies.
  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment from the command line.

The ideal candidates will:
  • Be passionate about building great software
  • Have experience engaging in rapid prototyping and iterative product development
  • Be nimble and flexible enough to thrive in a rapidly evolving business environment
  • Be an independent thinker and not a technologist who just executes on specs
  • Have big thoughts and the courage to voice them
  • Have enthusiasm for emerging technologies
  • Grasp the big picture, and
  • Be curious about and engaged in the broader world

We are turning the APM marketplace upside down by providing SaaS products that deliver high-value functionality previously only available through big-iron, enterprise software. We have many thousands of paying (!) customers. And with your help we’ll 10x that.

We are a Top 100 OnDemand Company, Best of SaaS (THINKStrategies), Top 100 Coolest Cloud Computing (CRN); Best Places to Work; the list of accolades goes on. You'll have time for family and side projects, so you can come to work every day ready to kick ass.

We provide competitive compensation (including pre-IPO stock options) and big-company benefits (medical, dental, etc) -- all while maintaining the energy, agility and fun of a start-up.

If you started programming before college because you wanted to try out an idea, you are our ideal candidate. Not only are you an excellent programmer, you are also someone who sincerely enjoys the art of finding sophisticated and efficient ways of solving problems. You are someone who is constantly leveling-up your coding game by staying current through side-projects, asking/answering StackOverflow questions or contributing to open source projects. If you take pride in your nerd cred, come join our team of talented techies.

Make sure you checkout our careers site (careers.scorebig.com) to learn more about ScoreBig.com and don't forget to check out our Hack Day video.

What we! look for:

It's uber important to us we hire top-notch developers.  Not just someone who can code, but someone who's curious and is always game to try new things.  So when we review a resume, we place a lot of emphasis on extracurricular activities like pet projects, past internships, StackOverflow/Github contributions, and other things that show us you are all about technology.  Now that you know what we are looking for, apply at your own risk :)

Why ScoreBig.com:

  • We take pride in what we do. We follow SCRUM, we believe in the Lean Startup philosophy, we practice TDD, write functional tests, and we do peer code reviews.

  • You won't get stuck in a technology black hole.  C# is our language of choice and ASP.NET MVC is our partner in crime.  We also use: nHibernate, Unity for AOP, Structure Map for DI, automapper, Jint, JQuery, Bootstrap, handlebars.js, R! equireJS, and a few other stuff.

  • You will get a ! first-class education.  Not only will you be working with top-notch developers, you will learn from them too.    , will also get to experience the growth of a startup first-hand.

Here is how we stack up on The Joel Test:

  1. Do you use source control? Absolutely.  Mercurial rocks!

  2. Can you make a build in one step? Check.

  3. Do you make daily builds? Of course.  In fact, our Continous Integration server does a full build, runs all unit tests and automated functional tests after every code check in.

  4. Do you have a bug database? What do you think?

  5. Do you fix bugs before writing new code? Technically we don't.  But we take bugs very seriously.  As production bugs are reported, we triage them right away and if necessary, a developer is assigned to it and a hot fix is rolled out within hours.  Otherwise, we treat b! ugs just like a user story - they are ranked and worked on based on priority.

  6. Do you have an up-to-date schedule? Why, yes.  We are a Lean/Scrum hybrid shop and we always know what's important to the business and we work on high priority items first.

  7. Do you have a spec? Kinda? We are a SCRUM shop so we write stories.  Plus, we are moving toward a just-in-time development process where developers are given problems to solve and it's up to that developer/team to come up with a solution.  So somewhere between day 0 and deployment, stories are written to describe what needs to be done with the necessary wireframes and designs.

  8. Do programmers have quiet working conditions? Not really.  We work in an open space so things could get a little noisy.  But you do catch random conversations every once in a while.

  9. Do you use the best tools money can buy?  You tell me.  Here's what the last develop! er we hired got:

    1. Lenovo ThinkPad T430: i5-3360M Processor,! 8GB RAM, Nvidia NVS 5400M with 1GB of RAM, Intel solid-state drive.

    2. 2 Dell 24" UltraSharp LCD monitors.

    3. Whatever keyboard/mouse combo you want.

  10. Do you have testers? Technically yes.  Did I mention each developer owns a story from start to finish? Learning and understanding the problem at hand, coming up with a solution, implementing the solution, and verifying the solution (unit tests, functional tests) are all part of the game. So we do have testers, but they tend to call themselves developers.

  11. Do new candidates write code during their interview? Absolutely.  Each candidate is expected to write code during every stage of the interview process.

  12. Do you do hallway usability testing? Sometimes.  For internal tools, we do demos a lot before each feature is rolled out.  But for our public facing website, we definitely need to do more.

P! erks:

  • 12 free live-event tickets every year.

  • All-you-can-eat snacks, drinks and sunflower seeds.

  • Friday lunches are on us (and dinners any time you work late).

  • Commuter Program.

  • Subsidized gym membership.

  • We regularly have Foosball tournaments, game nights, and Hack Days (check out our hack day video on our careers page).
