Transportation by Amazon, Shipment Planning - Software Development Manager

Transportation is looking for experienced manager for the Transportation by Amazon initiative - specifically managing Shipment Planning operations. Amazon.com stores and sells millions of unique items through its Fulfillment Centers. These items are shipped from tens of thousands of vendors into the multiple fulfillment centers in the Amazon network. Merchandize from thousands of vendors needs to be moved from vendor locations to these fulfillment centers and between fulfillment centers. Amazon has the largest selection - merchandise is associated with varying dimensions, restrictions and shipping costs. This results in a gigantic graph, with the nodes being vendors, carrier hubs, Amazon.com fulfillment centers, sort centers and end customers. The arcs in this graph represent the time of transportation and cost of transportation. Each node has a specific capacity, and so does each arc, and th! ere are time constraints on when a product needs to ship out of a node and when it needs to come into a different node. And Amazon needs to do all of this while incurring the least cost. The Shipment Planning team’s charter is to optimize this network to offer best service at the lowest cost

We are looking for a manager with experience developing global distributed technology solutions. The successful candidate will have experience working with distributed teams and building Enterprise systems. Being able to look at the big picture- from both a business and technical perspective - is key. The manager will drive the development of services globally while driving the expansion of TBA. A proven history working with large systems and managing high performing teams is critical.

Foremost, the Shipment Planning manager must have engineering experience and strong architecture skills. Experience within different development models and a history of defining an! d developing and delivering scalable systems will be essential! . In addition, successful candidates will be able to lead by example -balancing development responsibilities while participating in cross team efforts including architecture planning. Duties include designing services, development and architecture in addition to people and project management.

Finally Amazon services are part of one of the World’s largest Production systems. This requires all candidates to balance sustaining and stability issues for a 24x7 environment with new development.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science
  • 8+ years of industry experience
  • Software development management experience
  • Strong OO Design skills required. Database modeling and UML skills preferred
  • Proficiency in C++, Java, Perl and SQL, NOSQL in a Unix based environment
  • Experience delivering highly scalable, distributed, service oriented systems
  • Experience with Retail fulfillment and transportation is beneficial

  • Master's degree in Computer Science
