Job opening - Brooklyn Museum: Database Programmer

The Technology department at the Brooklyn Museum seeks a database programmer to help manage the museum’s Web presence and back-end workflow automation tools. In addition to database design, you'd be maintaining a collection of SSIS, PHP, and BASH scripts related to data sharing between back-end collections, media, and related content databases.

You’d be joining a small team on a variety of Web and in-gallery projects related to art, community, visitor experience and open access. Recent projects have included publishing over 93,000 object records in our collection online and the creation of an API alongside it; Split Second: Indian Paintings, an online experiment and in-gallery installation exploring visitors’ split-second reactions to our Indian paintings collection; and visualization and data analysis looking at objects in our collection; and GO, a Brooklyn-wide open studio project where artists open their! doors so community members decide who can be featured in a group exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.  

Here’s our skill checklist:

  • Expertise with standard SQL and familiarity with Mysql and SQL Server 2003/2008;
  • Experience in database-heavy Web applications;
  • Strong UNIX command-line programming (PHP, Ruby, BASH);
  • Strong data modeling skills (i.e. 3NF);
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SSIS packages and jobs;
  • Experience with object-oriented PHP;

This is a full-time position located at the Museum’s offices in Brooklyn.  It's a fun, friendly, and fast-paced environment and we keep the commitment to a 35 hour week, so you can expect to have a life outside the office. Most of us bike to work and potluck our lunches.
