Job opening - Software Design Engineer-Algorithms/C++ at Amazon (Seattle, WA)

Amazon’s Browse Software team handles all the infrastructure that supports Amazon's customers browsing experience. Amazon.com hosts Earth’s largest selection; with more than 100 million items in catalog. We typically add more than a million new products to our catalog every week from a wide range of merchants (large global enterprises to individual sellers). Our Product Classification system classifies these products into categories (e.g. cameras, jeans, sofas). Once the items are classified, shoppers can then browse/search for products in various Amazon.com categories. When customers search for specific products on Amazon’s search box, our Query Classification system directs customers to the search result page for most relevant categories.

We are looking for highly motivated engineers interested in building and maintaining our browse classification systems for products and search queries. Our two major goal are:
  • Constantly improve exist! ing browse systems, increase scalability, decrease latency, improve manageability and reporting
  • Create tools for other teams in Amazon, helping them to improve our browse classification data and automating this process as much as possible
You will have an opportunity to participate in two very different types of projects: building brand new, start-from-the-scratch internal tools for improving and automating our classification data; and resolving challenging, massive, enterprise level scalability and manageability problems.

  • Bachelors/Masters in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Experience with Java/C++ and web technologies (i.e. AJAX, DHTML, Javascript, CSS and web services)
  • Strengths in coding, data structures, algorithms, object oriented design and designing for performance, scalability, availability
  • At least 3+ years of solid hands on industry experience writing production quality code

  • Linux experienc! e preferred
  • Knowledge of professional software enginee! ring practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience with distributed computing and enterprise-wide systems
  • Extensive experience in Design/Distributed Systems/Data Structures/Algorithms
  • Be able to thrive in a fast paced, high energy and fun work environment and deliver value incrementally and frequently
