Lean Startup Engineer at Noom Inc. (New York, NY)

We’re looking for amazing engineers who want to make the world a better place, write elegantly readable and high-performance code, and get things done.  At Noom, you’ll learn all about the Android platform, scalable web infrastructure, customer discovery and product management, and how to run a lean startup.  These are some of technologies that we work with on a daily basis (they’re not pre-requisites, just fun things we use right now, and the list will likely change as we grow): Android, iOS, MySQL, Hadoop, git, Java, Python, AppEngine and GWT.  If you’ve never worked with some of them, that’s totally cool--you can learn them here.  The most important thing is a love of creating great software and making a real, quantifiable impact.

As a startup, we move rapidly, so things change a lot from month-to-month.  This means that it’s hard to describe exactly what you’ll be doing month to month, excep! t that you’ll get a chance to try a lot of different things.  To get a better idea of what the first few months are really like, here’s an excerpt from our most recent hire!

Tom’s First Two Months

I started at Noom with a breadth of technical knowledge, wanting to learn more about what makes a startup tick. Right away I was working on new features for Noom. Soon after, an effort to redesign the app started, and we collaborated with our designers and built an experimental prototype. Users were brought in to test it - it was so cool to see the work I did last week in front of a user! We learned a lot from the user tests and iterated on the design further before it was released a few weeks later. After the redesign I wanted to do something more low level, so I decided work on the Noom Coach backend. We implemented a framework allowing weight loss strategies to be articul! ated and integrated into what the coach suggests. Using this f! ramework we added strategies that adjust based on usage patterns of the user, such as articles related to the users diet. It was really interesting laying the foundation for a core platform technology. I had an interest in the business side of things, having a strong technical background from many engineering jobs. I had weekly 1:1 meetings with one of the founders, Artem, where he taught me the essentials like finding product market fit and disruptive innovation theory. This was a very unique learning experience I don’t think I could get anywhere else. I started putting this knowledge to use launching an experiment to explore a new market segment for Noom. Along with engaging technical work, Noom has a great culture that is constantly evolving. Things are transparent rather than top down, and process doesn’t exist unless it has to. Lunch is served every day by our amazing Chefs who love to spice things up (literally, if you ask them to). Noom rocks!
