The right candidates will be crazy smart, creative thinkers who are passionate about finding new, innovative ways to address “old†problems. You should think of yourself as a startup minded engineer ready to take ownership and make large, immediate contributions. One who can truly think through the product and help in product decisions and roadmap, develop smart and intuitive interfaces and is capable of tackling anything else that might come up within the development realm. Top tier educational backgrounds in engineering, mathematics or CS preferred.
As a Software Engineer at ZestCash, you’ll use your Ruby on Rails expertise along with Agile development methods to develop web-based applications in a big data environment.
Specifically, you will:
- Design, scope, and implement new systems and featuresâ€"from processing financial transactions to aggregating data on customers, to analyzing metrics and loan performance information
- Work with Product Management, Marketing, and Business to establish features, priorities, and timelines. This ranges from devising an attribution system for TV commercials, to establishing relationships with third party data providers.
- Lead and mentor more junior team members and perform as a subject matter expert in your field of expertise.
Through the use of your:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in CS or related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience designing and developing high transactional web applications including 2.5 years experience using RoR.
- Experience working with common Internet technologies (e.g. CSS, HTML, JavaScript, AJAX).
- Experience with RESTful API’s.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to explain technical issues to a non-technical audience.
- Strong work ethic and a can do attitude.

Based in Hollywood, CA, ZestCash was founded by Douglas Merrill - the former CIO of Google - along with a handful of ex-Googlers and Capital One folks to bring social responsibility to the consumer loan industry. Normally, lenders determine who should get loans using a small amount of data bought from a data provider. When this data is missing or negative, the borrower is turned away. But why buy a handful of variables rather than use vast amounts of data provided by the customer, alternative data sources, and Internet crawls?
As it stands today, good people are being denied credit because old world processes don’t take advantage of today’s data-rich environment. In our worldview, all data is credit data, and we should use it all to make better loan decisions.
