The Adler Planetarium is America's first planetarium and opened in 1930. In the over 80 years since, it has expanded twice and currently hosts nearly half a million on-site visitors a year. In the last five years, nearly every gallery and theater at the Adler has undergone a complete transformation. The next era of the Adler's development will include closer integration of technology in our engagement of visitors including context aware spaces, mobile integration, new display technologies and an entirely re-imagined web presence.
The Adler is also host to the technical team behind the Zooniverse (http://www.zooniverse.org) which began in 2007 with a project called Galaxy Zoo (http://www.galaxyzoo.org) in which members of the public were invited to help astronomers classify galaxy images by their shape. Four years later the Zooniverse ha! s 12 projects and more than 700,000 'citizen scientists' helping do real research on the web. Our Zooniverse projects are varied; ranging from transcribing ancient greek papyri (http://www.ancientlives.org) to detecting new planets going around stars (http://www.planethunters.org). Your work will be seen by millions of people and you'll be collaborating with organizations including TED, Microsoft Research and SETI.
The role: We're looking for a developer with significant web development experience to work in collaboration with the Zooniverse development team to help reimagine the Adler's digital strategy. Ideally you'll have worked with some of the modern Javascript frameworks such as Spine or Backbone, have experience with either Ruby or Python and have built experiences for mobile devices. A good working knowledge of how ! to integrate web applications with remote web services is also! highly desirable as is a good understanding of object oriented programming. Ideally you'll have experience of the full life-cycle of software development and will have an opinion on your favorite testing framework. You should also know how to write clean, well-structured code and be able to write standards-compliant HTML and CSS.
The office & team: We're based out of the Adler Planetarium in Chicago (http://www.adlerplanetarium.org/) and have some of the best views of the city around. You'll be working in a team of 10 in a relaxed environment. You get to choose your tools (e.g. Mac or PC) and the software that you use, there's also an opportunity for travel if you want it.
