Reporting directly to the Director of Publishing Technology, the Publishing Technology Coordinator is a highly visible, strategic position with duties ranging from developing production automation processes to advising management about long-term and strategic issues facing the entire enterprise as ! well as working in a central department that supports all othe! r departments at all levels.



Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Develop and maintain Applescript, Cocoa, and Real Studio, and Javascript-based scripts and applications used in the creation of specific ancillaries, marketing pieces, and other highly-focused needs as they arise. In most cases, XML plays a central role in their development.

  • Research and advise to all levels and departments on the following


o   Software and hardware purchasing decisions


o   New publishing-related technologies and services



  • Research, creation, and enforce strategic, company-wide procedures and policies related to prepress, production, and related technologies such as the XML family of languages.

  • Support and administer MediaBank by Wave and in-house ancillary applications, the company's chosen digital asset management platform, with th! e assistance of the IS department.

  • Support and administer Filemaker databases for figure logs with the assistance of Photo Research.

  • Provide timely 2nd tier Mac software and hardware support to IT.

  • Work directly with Production and Media Services staff and assist however needed to maintain consistently fast-paced production schedules.

  • Other duties as needed.



Position Requirements:




  • Four-year degree or equivalent experience.

  • Programming experience on the Macintosh in Mac OS X is required with Applescript using Script Debugger and Script Editor, Objective-C with the Cocoa frameworks in Xcode, XML and related languages, Javascript, HTML, CSS. Real Studio (REALbasic) experience desired but not required.

  • 5–7 years experience in the following:


o   Highly knowledgeable in b! ook publishing, supporting design, production, and editorial groups.

o   Expert in Mac and PC platforms for all of the major desktop publishing application including, but not limited to Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Distiller), QuarkXpress, and related applications.



  • 3–5 years experience in the following:


o   Applescript in a print and digital production environment.


o   XML in a print and digital production environment.



  • Must be comfortable working in anything from 1/c to 4/c, 32+ page documents, maintaining styles across multiple documents. Must be fully knowledgeable of prepress and desktop publishing principles (RGB vs CMYK, TIFF/EPS vs  JPG, TrueType vs. Type 1).



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:




  • Ability to research, learn, and move seamlessly between current and new applications and technologies as ne! eded is a must.

  • Very detail oriented, sensitive to deadlines, strong creative problem-solving ability, ability to work on a wide variety of tasks.

  • Excellent communicator and team player, able to work with many others in varied functions.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work within tight schedules a must.
