Job Summary
Caltech Optical Observatories (COO) is inviting qualified candidates to apply for a position as an instrument instrument engineer within its Optical and Infrared (OIR) Instrumentation Group. The Group develops state-of-the-art astronomical instruments for the Palomar, Keck, and Thirty Meter Telescope Observatories, as well as for other facilities and missions in support of Caltech faculty research.
Applicants are expected to have a demonstrated record of success in fielding complex opto-electromechanical systems on large telescopes or equivalent experience.
Job Duties
-Successful development of instrument control software using professional software development strategies, both individually and when managing distributed software efforts.
-E! ffective hands-on technical leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
-Capability with formal systems engineering including requirements engineering, error budget development and flow-down, and risk assessment.
-Recognized excellence in one or more of the following technical disciplines: optical, mechanical, electrical, or detector engineering; or experimental physics.
-Extensive knowledge of fundamental physics and engineering principles.
-Excellent working familiarity with instrumentation components, such as optics, optomechanics, thermal control and vacuum systems, actuators, embedded controllers.
-Authority with software documentation standards, version control systems, repositories, and regression testing infrastructure.
-Effective project planning and management of innovative / prototypical scientific equipment.
-Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
-Ph.D. in engineering, physics, or astrophysics o! r equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
-Capabl! e of independent, original design work including, but not limited to, astronomical cameras, spectrographs, robotic positioners, and active/adaptive optics systems.
-Demonstrated strong integration and testing skills including, but not limited to, proper understanding of cryogenic instruments, alignment and assembly tolerances, metrology systems, automated data acquisition systems, statistical analysis, and computer / hardware interfaces.
-Excellent written and oral communications skills and work well with technical peers and with astronomical faculty.
-Successful pre-employment physical, DMV, and background checks.
-Occasional travel and work at high altitudes (14,000 ft.) is required, including both daytime and occasional nighttime schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
-Ph.D. and 5 years experience.
-Strong publication record in astronomical instrumentation and have been recognized internationally for their past achievements. !
