Job opening - Software Dev Engineer (Information Retrieval or Machine Learning) at Amazon (Seattle, WA)

Amazon’s Browse Classification team at Amazon.com is looking for highly motivated engineers interested in building and maintaining our systems to automatically classify our products. Amazon.com hosts Earth’s largest selection; with more than 100 million items in catalog. We typically add more than a million new products to our catalog every week from a wide range of merchants (large global enterprises to individual sellers). Our Product Classification system classifies these products into categories (e.g. cameras, jeans, sofas). Once the items are classified, shoppers can then browse/search for products in various Amazon.com categories. When customers search for specific products on Amazon’s search box, our Query Classification system directs customers to the search result page for most relevant categories.

You will work on variety of internal tools used for managing, monitoring, and improving product classification process and quality. Our project! s range from creating internal web based portals and tools, building large scale distributed builds that infer a product’s classification, creating search indices that power our tools, to experimenting with crowd sourcing strategies to classify products. You will have an opportunity to participate in new projects from its conception to final deployment stages as well as to help resolve massive, enterprise level scaling and data mining problems.

  • Bachelors/Masters in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 4+ years professional experience in software development
  • Extensive experience with Java and distributed applications
  • Candidates must be self-directed, demonstrate leadership potential and be team players
  • Strengths in coding, data structures, algorithms, object oriented design and designing for performance, scalability, availability
  • Be able to thrive in a fast paced, high energy and f! un work environment where we're agile (i.e. Scrum) and deliver! value incrementally and frequently

  • Linux experience preferred
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Background or experience in Information Retrieval or Machine Learning
  • Extensive experience in Design/Distributed Systems/Data Structures/Algorithms
