ABOUT US
FiftyThree is the company behind Paper, an iPad app for freeform writing/sketching/drawing.
Paper has done well since we released it five months ago. Among other things, it won this year’s Apple Design Award for iPad, it’s been App of the Month, it’s had nearly 3 million downloads, and it’s used and loved by creatives all over, including designers at Apple, marketers at Nike, and filmmakers at Pixar.
But Paper is just the beginning for us, and we’re now hard at work on our next big product. Our company’s higher-level goal is to bring creation too! ls into the post-PC era, and we think there’s a huge opportunity there – just like there was for Office when the PC started becoming popular. Mobile and tablets are changing everything.
We like to say that Paper is “where ideas begin”; what we’re working on now is a service to “bring ideas together”. To use a rough analogy, something along the lines of GitHub for ideas and creations.
We have a great team of developers and designers spanning iOS and web, but we’re looking for 2-3 more developers to join us in building something great. That’s where we hope you’ll come in.
ABOUT YOU
We’re looking for great engineers to drive our back-end systems and infrastructure. The rol! e is flexible depending on your passions and expertise, but ul! timately, you’ll help us build and scale great services for our users.
For example, perhaps you love algorithms and engineering performant solutions. That’s great — we know our current activity feed approach can use improvement; have a go at it. (It’s a fun graph problem.)
Or perhaps you have prior experience with setting up distributed databases. Perfect — we could use a hand in setting up our high-availability cluster with master-slave replication and cache-based sharding.
Or perhaps you love being data-driven and working with metrics. Right on — it’ll be critical for us to have great instrumentation and analytics in place so we can monitor early and monitor often.
Whatever your specific role or skillset, you’ll work across a diverse set of technologies, because we believe in using the best tools for the job and we aren’t afraid of trying new things. Our current stack combines Node.js with Neo4j, a graph database, and we deploy on a mix of Heroku and Amazon EC2. We write in both JavaScript and CoffeeScript, and we keep track of it all through GitHub and Trello.
You don’t have to have prior experience with any of these things directly, but you should have some history of building or scaling systems and services like ours. Even better if you can show us depth and passion somewhere. Of course, strong engineering skills and an ability to learn quickly are a must.
You’ll be just our second service engineer, so you’ll help ! set the tone for our company’s engineering culture, proc! ess, and workflow. And if we succeed, you’ll certainly help shape the company’s overall future and direction, as well.
