We're Yorba, a small open source software company in San Francisco. Our team is small (8 people at the moment) and growing. We founded Yorba in 2009 because we wanted to see the free desktop (i.e. Linux/GNOME/Ubuntu) succeed but we thought the applications available there were a decade behind those on Mac OS in terms of functionality and usability. We have several projects underway:
1. Our photo manager (Shotwell) has become the default photo program in Ubuntu and other popular Linux distributions, and is arguably the most used open source photo manager in the world at this point. We've made 12 successive releases over the last few years but still have plenty more to do to reach our goal of having a free photo manager which is as powerful and usable as commercial programs (iPhoto, Lightroom and so on).
2. For the last year we've been working on a new email client, Geary, and we just released version 0.1 last month. (See a review at htt! p://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/05/new-e-mail-client-geary-launches-on-linux). Ultimately we want Geary to be as convenient on the desktop as Gmail is in a browser: our interface is based on conversations and we want to add fast searching, transparent encryption and more.
3. Currently we're sustaining ourselves by working on a contract programming project for a major open source company. The project involves photos and is written in QML and C++, but that's about all we can say here. The work is pretty interesting, though.
4. We're excited about trying to use crowdfunding to fund future development since we have highly visible programs and an enthusiastic user base. Obviously crowdfunding is on the rise (witness Kickstarter) and it would seem like a perfect match for the free software work we do. But we haven't been able to find a crowdfunding site we like for software projects (Kickstarter doesn't seem like a good match for various reasons), so we're co! nsidering building our own. If we move ahead with this effort,! the site will probably launch early next year and our goal will be to become the premier site for crowdfunding software projects in general. We'd like to use the new site to crowdfund our own projects and hopefully as a source of revenue in its own right.
